Conference Time

Just a reminder that we have conferences starting Thursday and continuing next week! I look forward to meeting with you. For this conference students do not need to come but they will lead the spring conference. We will go over the report card and share all of the growth we have made so far. Please remember that the conferences are back to back so arriving on time would be appreciated. The conferences will take place in Mrs. Richard's room  number 117. Thank you!

More fun practice with Xtra Math!

Students have been studying addition and subtraction in math! We are hoping to start getting faster! A great way to practice is on the computer. In order to use this program you will need a one time code. This will come in your students yellow folder tonight. Please save this for future reference! This site keeps track of your child's progress and only take a few minutes each day! After passing addition facts they will get a certificate and move on to subtraction!

Balls and Ramps!

In science this month we have been working on our balls and ramps unit. Students get the opportunity to discuss the properties of different balls. What makes them roll? What materials help them bounce? We will end our unit with a trip to the Children's Museum and a balls and ramps day!

Snacks and Celebrations

Cedar Rapids is trying to become a blue zone district! This is an initiative to get healthy. As part of the effort first grade is asking that parents bring fruits and vegetables as snacks rather than cupcakes, cookies or other sweets. This also helps with the growing amount of students with allergies specifically gluten. Thank you for understanding and helping us be blue! :D

Raz Kids Reading

First grade if off and running! We are now working really hard on our reading. One way you can help at home is by allowing your student time to practice their reading. Raz Kids is a great program that allows student to read many new book online! You can get to the program by clicking on the Raz Kids link on my blog. Please do not assist  your child too much on this activity. The program will know when it is time to move the student up to harder books. Thanks again for helping us become better readers!

Poetry Journals

Poetry Journals are used to practice fluency. This week we added the poem "First Day of School" and "Everybody Has a Name". Students will bring their poetry journals home every Friday. Over the weekend, they need to read the new poems to as many people as they can! They should be signed and returned on Monday every week! Thank you for helping us be better readers!
